About Hemp

Is the hemp used in Good Hemp products the same as Marijuana/Cannabis?
The simple answer is ‘no’. Hemp has no Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) the psychoactive substance found in Marijuana. It will not make you ‘high’ or effect you in any way. Hemp is a completely different variant of the cannabis family to Marijuana. Hemp is regulated both in the UK (by the Home Office) and by the EU authorities to ensure plant breeding remains vigilant with no cross contamination. We test all our seed for THC as one of our classifications for food grade hemp seed.

What is Hemp and where does it come from?
Hemp is one of the oldest agricultural crops. There is probably evidence of historical hemp production near where you live. It is one of the most environmentally friendly, sustainable and nutritious plants on earth. Grown in a field like any other crop, each hemp plant has a single stem and grows about 3 meters tall, the seed is on the top of the plant.

What is in a hemp seed?
Hemp seeds are a fruit (not a nut) and come from the hemp plant. They are made up of 35% oil, 25% protein, 29% dietary fibre. Hemp Seed contains no allergens. The fat in hemp seed is uniquely healthy and the proteins are one of the only plant proteins similar to meat, milk, and eggs. Hemp seed is a naturally rich source of protein, Omega 3 and fibre. It contains all 20 amino acids our bodies need, is low in saturated fat and is easy to digest.

Health FAQs

Are Good Hemp products GM Free?
Yes, our whole range is GM free. We are accredited suppliers in the Non GMO Project.

Why is Omega 3 so good for you?
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats, the ‘good’ fats. Hemp seeds are packed full of Omega 3 essential fatty acids which many experts believe aid good brain and heart health as well as boosting circulation. Omega-3 fatty acids, when combined with diet and exercise, can also help lower levels of the blood fat triglyceride, and raise levels of "good" cholesterol (HDL). Hemp has the easiest form of Omega 3 to metabolise amongst all forms of plant Omega 3.

Why do we need protein in our diet?
Protein is essential for the healthy growth and repair of all our body tissues: our muscles (including the heart), internal organs (such as lungs and liver) and our skin. In addition, protein is a good source of energy.

Is hemp a complete protein?
Yes it is. Hemp contains all 20 amino acids required by our bodies, including all 9 essential amino acids that our bodies cannot produce by themselves. It is one of the very few plant sources of complete protein.

What is a complete protein?
Proteins are either complete or incomplete. Complete proteins, usually found in animal products, provide all the essential amino acids that your body cannot produce on its own. Incomplete proteins, usually found in vegetables and grains, lack one or more of these amino acids. Hemp contains all 20 amino acids, including all 9 essential ones making it one of the very few plant sources of complete protein.

In addition to the amino acid content, the ratio of these amino acids defines a protein’s quality. Hemp seeds contain a desirable ratio of amino acids, making it closer to the quality of animal-based proteins than almost any other plant. The protein in hemp consists of 33% albumin and 67% edestine, which are readily digested by your body.

Absolutely. Deep frying with Good Oil is not recommended, but you can use it for stir frys. It is also fantastic for cooking roast potatoes and roast vegetables.

How is Good Hemp Oil produced?
At our farm in Devon we carefully select the best hemp seeds to be cleaned and then we cold press them to squeeze out all the oil inside. And we mean Cold Press – we don’t pre heat seed. We then filter the oil to remove any sediment and that’s it. Nothing added or taken away.

Once opened, how long can Good Hemp Oil be kept?
Good Oil should be stored in a cool place out of direct sunlight – like any oil. Once opened consume before the Best Before Date printed on the bottle.

Good Hemp Milk Alternative

Is Good Hemp Milk suitable for babies and toddlers?
Good Hemp Milk is a useful alternative for toddlers and young children who may have allergies to cow’s milk or whose parents prefer non-dairy options. It is not a substitute for breast milk for young babies. It is fortified with Calcium and Vitamin D required for bone development.

How does Good Hemp Milk compare to Cow’s milk?
The big difference in terms of health is that hemp milk is made from good polyunsaturated fat versus the saturated fat in dairy milk. Hemp milk is allergen free so does not contain any dairy or lactose, and is easy to digest. Good Hemp also contains Omega 3, an essential fatty acid which many experts claim can support brain and heart health. Omega-3 fatty acids, when combined with diet and exercise, have also been known to help lower levels of the blood fat triglyceride, and raise levels of "good" cholesterol (HDL). Like cow’s milk, Good Hemp can be used on cereals, in tea, coffee, shakes, porridge, cooking or simply as a refreshing drink.

How does Good Hemp Milk compare to Soya milk?
Good Hemp contains no allergens and is easy to digest. It has not been known to cause any hormonal imbalances which are associated with soya (hemp contains no Phytoestrogen). Like Soya, it is plant-based, low in saturated fat and cholesterol-free, but Good Hemp has the additional health benefit of Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, which many experts believe aid a good immune system and healthy skin, hair and joints. Just one 250ml serving of Good Hemp provides 50% of your recommended daily intake of Omega 3. Hemp also does not contain GMO.

Once opened, how long can Good Hemp Milk be kept?
Once opened keep refrigerated and consumer within 5 days.

Good Hemp Protein Powders

How is Good Hemp Protein Powder made?
At our farm in Devon we cold press hemp seeds to extract the oil inside which is used to make our Good Hemp Oil. The remaining protein and fibre is finely milled to produce Good Hemp Protein Powder. No chemicals, or heavy processing are involved in this process so all the nutritional content is maintained.

How should I store Good Hemp Protein Powder?
You should store Good Hemp Protein Powder in a cool dark place out of direct sunlight. A store cupboard is perfect. As our tubs are opaque, they are already well protected from sunlight. Our pouches are re-sealable to keep the powder fresher for longer if stored away from direct sunlight.

Are Good Hemp Protein Powders legal and will I fail a drugs test if I use them?
The variety of hemp we use for our products is approved by the UK's Home Office and by the EU. These varieties are entirely safe for human consumption and do not contain Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC - the active substance found in Marijuana). We test our raw seed for THC. Hemp will not cause a false positive drug result or any psychoactive effect.

How should I use Good Hemp Protein Powders?
Good Hemp Protein Powders can be drunk as a shake or used in cooking. For a shake, mix a 30g or 40g serving (depending on the product, the recommended serving size is stated on pack) with fruit, fruit juice or whatever you fancy, or just add to water or Good Hemp Milk to supplement your diet.
