7 tips for eating healthy when you’re eating out

It’s a new year and so far you’ve not strayed from your healthy new diet. Friends are urging you to go out to restaurants, but how do you stick to your diet plan without falling at the first hurdle? Here are 7 tips to keep you on track when you’re eating out.

1.) Research the menu. We know it may sound tedious, but if you take just 5-10 minutes to have a good look through the menu online prior to setting off, then you’ll know exactly what healthier options you want to order upon arrival. This way you’ll find it easier to avoid temptation when it comes to that mac ‘n’ cheese you’ve suddenly spied!

2.) Instead of nibbling on the bread basket before your meal why not order some olives instead? Olives are rich in iron and dietary fibre, and they’re delicious to boot.

3.) Swap out the sides. Skip the chips or onion rings and instead opt for a portion of seasonal vegetables or a baked potato - it’s low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium.

4.) Although drinking isn’t generally recommended when it comes to following a healthy eating regime, sticking to spirits is a healthier option as clear spirits tend to have less calories and a lower sugar content in comparison to other alcohols. Choosing a low calorie mixer is always a smart choice as well. Just remember to stick to just one or two drinks and ensure that they are using single measures. Don’t like spirits? Turn a glass of white wine into a longer drink by adding soda to make a refreshing spritzer.

5.) Savour each mouthful. Research suggests that those who chew slowly tend to eat less and feel fuller more quickly. Due to portion sizes at restaurants differing from home-sized portions make sure you really take your time with your food. Besides, it’s a good way to catch up with friends over the dinner table.

6.) Sip water throughout the meal. Not only will this slow you down and help you enjoy your food even more, but it also helps your brain to realise when you’re full – before the plate is empty.

7.) Skip the dessert or stick to fruit salad. We know this may be tricky, but you’ll thank yourself for it later. Why not make our delicious hemp milk quinoa coconut pudding in advance and you’ll have something to look forward to when you get home!
